JuJu Smith-Schuster

WR, Steelers

1200px-U+25CB.svg.png

JuJu Smith-Schuster was horrendous last year with 42 receptions for 552 yards and 3 touchdowns in 12 games (56 receptions for 736 yards and 4 touchdowns over the course of an entire season), but that was without Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. Most receivers with Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges at quarterback would do pretty bad too. His numbers from last year should pretty much be ignored. The last time Smith-Schuster had Big Ben at quarterback he put up 111 receptions for 1,426 yards and 7 touchdowns. It should be noted that Smith-Schuster had those numbers with Antonio Brown still operating as the top receiver in the offense. The addition of Chase Claypool in the second round makes it possible for Smith-Schuster to go back to the role he played with Brown on the field as the slot receiver. That will give him mismatches against nickel defensive backs, so he won’t necessarily be covered any better than he was two years ago. Smith-Schuster had 166 targets with Brown on the field, and we could see a similar number this year. Eric Ebron, Dionte Johnson, and Chase Claypool will eat into most of Brown’s targets, but if there are any left, they’d go to JuJu. If Smith-Schuster gets even a small number of Brown’s targets he could have over 200 targets on the year, which would be absolutely insane. He is the only player with the chance to potentially challenge Michael Thomas to lead the league in receptions next year. Of course, this is all assuming that Roethlisberger’s arm is fine and the Steelers continue to pass at the rate they did two years ago, which might not be the case. That adds some risk to Smith-Schuster’s outlook. Overall, JuJu Smith-Schuster has top-3 upside, and although he does come with some risk he is being severely undervalued in fantasy this year and is worth drafting in the third round.
